  1. With the enormous financial and academic resources available at DGS, I do not believe the school will not be able to train up more students from Primary One onwards to play the various musical instruments. This is really the first time I hear that a Secondary School decides more effective to provide this incentive of enrollment in exchange for the ready availablity of the flute player to join the school musical band. I know the overseas Universities offer scholarship in attracting the sports elites considering to enroll at their preferred universities. Is education going along the same path of commercial world?

Perhaps the main attraction is the brand which every parents without exception will like to enrol their children. This can be reflected by the thousands of parents participating the school information day/ night as they may believe their children need a head start. By the time a student commence his/her university study, no one care which secondary school he/she came from.

The teachers in the existing school may be greatly disappointed by the fact that their best students leave for DGS/DBS/… just because of the brand rather than losing the students due to lack of motivating infrastructure (facilities & teaching). And no one can guarantee he/she can leave the famous school with flying colour when they graduate.

  2. This way of ‘inviting’ outstanding students to their school has been a tradition. It’s always there, but they, as the writer here suggests, don’t always succeed. I’ve had classmates who decide not to go because they do not treasure an all-round education. If you’re good at sports, all you need to do is show up at school, do well in inter-school competitions, and that would be it. Other schools of similar background who don’t ‘invite’ students would still insist students to try their best in academic studies and participate in other school activities.

  6. It is really a catch22 situation for the large & famous schools picking up the academically brights, musical talents, sport elite students to join them much because it it too good to refuse the offer. The existing schools lose their bright students and the other parents may think that the children should do likewise. That may be the reasons leading to culling of some schools in outer area because of lower enrollment and lack of funding to sustain the continuation of teaching for the children willing to stay.

My primary school was in high demand when I completed my priamry education. Then the enrolment dropped substantially years after years because the parents had no confidence in the school and instead enrol their young children at least 10km away and had to spend two daily bus trip to send to and pick up the kids from the new schools. Is this the magic of BRAND? Unfortunately the primary school had to close over ten years ago after the number of students dwindled to less than 10 in total within the six grades, a bit better than the situations depicted in the earlier popular film about a passionate headmistress & five little kids.

Education system should be universal and all students are entitled to the same education curriculum. It is unfair to deny the disadvantaged students the opportunity to learn and develop their skill if the resource allocation is primarily based on the number of students without considering the family background.
